The stellarator: snipping the residual, and pinging the solver every breath

In August we registered a principle we called the traffic circle. Structural mandatory routing, no bypass. The parts of the machine that worked, the waist, the mouth, the answer key, worked because nothing could go around them. The parts that were declined, and there were several, were declined because something could. We built the principle into the breath loop as a cut in the state’s own path, tried two forms, and one of them scored zero on three hundred problems. The autopsy said it died of payload, not principle: what crossed the cut was the average of all the slots, a global blur. We salvaged the per-slot notebook from the wreck, closed the file, and moved on.

This week the principle came back from three directions at once, and this morning we re-fired it. Here is what it is, why now, and what the first number said.

The residual is a bypass

Our machine reads a problem seven times and revises a bank of slots between readings. From one breath to the next, the state is carried forward by a residual connection: the new state is the old state plus an update. That is the standard transformer move, and it is also a highway that every organ in the loop can be routed around. The notebook writes ink each breath and reads it back; the garage holds deposits; the solver hands back facts. None of them has to carry anything, because the state carries itself.

The severance ladder this week put numbers on that. The notebook, severed, costs four points on wild and sixteen on synthetic. The garage costs about one point. The second slot mixer, injecting at seventy percent of the state’s band, costs nothing. Loud and redundant, because the highway was open.

Then the two cookers taught us the law. Seal an organ’s bypass on a share of rows and the loss does not learn to use the organ. It learns to survive the seal through the residual, which the seal left standing. The pressure cooker was the exception, and the reason it worked is that it severed the residual too: the committed channel, or nothing. A cooker converts headroom only when the residual has no way to carry the sealed rows itself.

The stellarator is that law built into geometry, on every row, with no cooker.

The snip

Across the six loop breaths the residual’s weight runs 0.93, 0.75, 0.50, 0.25, 0.07, and then zero. The notebook’s read takes the complement. The handoff is helical and gentle, no cliff at any breath, which is why we named the form after the fusion device whose twist is built into its geometry rather than induced by a current. By the last breath, nothing of the previous state crosses directly. The state the final reading operates on is the notebook’s ink, addressed by what the state wanted to recall.

Two details matter. August’s schedule stopped at five percent, because the loop’s last breath is index six of seven. Under this week’s law five percent is still a bypass, so the new schedule reaches exactly zero. And the clock block, the sixty-four rotating planes that give each breath its bearing, is exempt from the cut. The clock is a coordinate system, not a road. The ink would overwrite the compass.

A traffic light is a gain: a learned scalar that says how much of an organ gets through, which training turns down until the organ is silent. The mask head’s gain went from 0.02 to 0.0002. A roundabout is geometry, and traffic yields to what is already in the circle. In gradient terms, cutting the residual leaves the cross-breath gradient exactly one path, through the ink, so the memory organ receives it by construction rather than by invitation.

The birth read

Before the arm trained, we read the pruned candidate with the residual snipped at read time, no retraining. On wild it scored 0.0010. On synthetic, 0.0000. That is the residual’s removal cost on a model trained to lean on it: everything. The notebook that carries four points beside an open highway carries nothing when asked to be the road, because it was never made to be. Our on-record prediction was wild under 0.10 and synthetic under 0.50. It held and understated it.

So the arm training now starts from a floor of zero and must convert twenty-five points of wild and ninety-seven of synthetic into the junction. The bars are pinned: within a point of the candidate on wild and half a point on synthetic, the notebook’s removal cost up by two points on wild or three on synthetic because it is now the road, the clock probe intact because the exemption is a claim to be tested, and the state’s radius per breath predicted to stop climbing, because the junction is a sink. The kill is three points below the candidate on wild, which would reopen the August grave.

Every breath, and what comes back

The other half of the assembly is older still. In early September we factored the breath loop so that each breath is a separately dispatched step with a solver call between every one. Commit the tentative parse, run the symbolic propagation, hand back what it found, breathe again. We proved it against the fused loop on the real champion, forward and backward, and then set it aside.

What comes back from the solver, on every breath, is three things. Facts: the variables it can already determine. Refusal: the parse cannot be satisfied. And, as of this morning, the core: on a refusal, the smallest set of factors that cannot coexist, a proof about which slots are wrong together. We measured that signal last night on the pruned candidate’s final parses. The solver refuses half of all wrong parses and not one of 237 right ones, and three of every four slots the core names are actually wrong. The collider’s front, by contrast, marked wrong slots at 78% and right slots at 72%. A rumor everywhere; a proof on half the rows.

The same build that proved the per-breath loop also recorded why the ping had seemed to do nothing: the facts were injected into a state that only the readout heads read. The loop never saw them. The solver was talking to the mouth, not the hands. So the return signal has two ports from here. Facts and the core enter the loop’s own lanes, through the mask that the next breath reads under, opening attention among the core’s slots and re-focusing their token reads on the sentences they came from. And once the notebook is proven as the junction, the garage’s deposits join it, so that what the solver has committed becomes part of what the state must pass through.

One highway, one roundabout. The notebook alone tonight. Then the garage. The core comes in through the wheel, not the carry.

What we are watching for

The state turns over by half every breath in the current family and never freezes; the notebook is its only real memory. Under the snip, the last breath’s state is almost entirely the junction read, and the breath gate, a learned scalar on the whole update, has closed to two percent by then. If the radius read shows the late breaths freezing onto the shelf, the next delta is the gate, not the junction. The arm lands early this afternoon.
