Nazaré

Off the coast of Portugal, near a town called Nazaré, surfers ride the biggest waves anyone rides anywhere on earth — walls of water a hundred feet tall, breaking with a violence that looks less like weather than like geology. The Atlantic Ocean is enormous and, by itself, diffuse: its energy is spread across thousands of miles of open water, arriving at most coastlines as ordinary swell. What makes Nazaré different is invisible from the surface. Just offshore, a submarine canyon plunges nearly three miles deep, and its shape funnels the ocean’s scattered energy into one place, compressing it until it has nowhere to go but up. The topography you cannot see is what makes the wave you can.

Our reasoning machine reads math word problems written in ordinary English, and English, for our purposes, is the Atlantic. It is enormous and diffuse by nature. The same underlying arithmetic problem — one quantity, three times another — can arrive wearing apples, or reservoirs, or distances, or ticket prices, told in any order, padded with any amount of irrelevant color. There is no limit, in principle, to how many different swells can carry the same energy. A system that tried to meet that variety head-on, matching against surface patterns it had seen before, would be fighting the ocean directly — and the ocean always wins that fight, because it is larger than any finite set of examples could cover.

So we didn’t build a system to fight the ocean. We built the canyon.

Every piece of architecture described elsewhere in this project exists to funnel, not to fight. The narrow information “waist” that every sentence gets forced through destroys the costume — the names, the phrasing, the order of telling — and keeps only the shape underneath. The silhouette recognition that follows treats “Maria has three times as many apples as Ben” and “the reservoir holds triple what the tank does” as the identical dance, because after the waist, they are identical, the surface variation having already been discarded. The atlas of known operation-shapes gives the system a small, fixed set of channels to sort every incoming problem into, the way a canyon has a fixed shape regardless of which particular wave arrives to be shaped by it. The three-rotor clock that keeps track of where a word sits, when in the machine’s own thinking it is, and what connects to what, is more of the same funneling, applied to the deliberation itself rather than just the initial reading.

None of this is fighting variety. All of it is shaping the channel variety has to pass through.

And the payoff looks like Nazaré’s wave: not a flattening of the ocean’s energy, but a concentration of it into something singular and legible. A word problem that arrives as three meandering sentences, padded with irrelevant nouns and a story about a bake sale, comes out the other side of the funnel as one small, exact diagram — a handful of quantities and the arithmetic linking them — that either resolves cleanly under the symbolic solver’s crushing logic or visibly does not. The whole architecture’s job is to take something diffuse and turn it into something that breaks cleanly, the way a hundred miles of ocean turns, at exactly one canyon, into one wave you can watch rise and fall.

You don’t fight the ocean’s variety. You can’t out-list it, you can’t out-memorize it, and every attempt to meet it surface to surface eventually meets a costume you haven’t seen. What you can do is shape the floor beneath it, and let the water do what water does when the ground beneath it narrows: rise into something you can finally see the shape of.
